GUWAHATI: About 100 schools across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) received a bomb threat email early on Wednesday, May 1, prompting widespread evacuation, heightened security and a multi-agency investigation. Parents were asked to collect their children, while the police and other security forces began searching the schools for explosives.

The same bomb threat emails, which appear to have originated in Russia, were sent to schools in Delhi and NCR around 4 am, claiming that bombs had been placed inside educational institutions and threatening to detonate them. Similar threats were received by airports over the past two days and several hospitals on Monday.

The affected schools included prominent institutions like the Sanskriti School in Chankyapuri, DPS in RK Puram, and Vasant Kunj in the southern district. Other schools in the South West district, including DPS Noida, ITL Public School, and Amity Pushp Vihar and Saket, have also received threats. The schools immediately evacuated the students as a precaution.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is coordinating with other central agencies and police departments to trace the origin of the emails. Cyber police stations and special units are working to locate the source of the threats, with initial investigations indicating the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) to hide the source.

Teams from Noida Police, Fire Services and Bomb Squad were at DPS Noida where students were sent home. "We haven’t found anything yet." Shibari Meena, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) in Noida, told the media.

Delhi Minister Atishi urged parents and citizens not to panic, stating, "Several schools received bomb threats this morning. Students have been evacuated, and the Delhi Police is searching these premises. So far nothing has been found in any of the schools." She added that they are in continuous contact with the police and school authorities, and will update the parents as needed.

A police officer told the media that the database containing school information may have been compromised, allowing emails to be sent to multiple schools at the same time.
