Mumbai: The BMC has proposed to fell 316 trees and plant 66 others to pave way for a new service road under the Eastern Expressway flyover in south Mumbai. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 62 crore, while the civic body has also appointed a project management consultant for road alignment mapping. The width of the existing road is insufficient, so the civil authorities decided to improve it.

Currently, there is a main road under the expressway that runs between Daya Shankar Marg and Bombay Port Trust. The upcoming 4 km long service road will run parallel to the footpath. The existing road was earlier maintained by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. It was handed over to the BMC after the expressway was opened.

Now the civic body has issued a notice about felling trees for the project so that the citizens can send their suggestions and objections regarding it to the municipal corporation. “The width of the existing road is 40 meters, which should be 60 meters. According to the 2034 development plan, there is a provision for the construction of a 10-meter wide service road next to each main road. Since the existing road is narrow, emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire engines face inconvenience when passing through this route. The road The new one will be built right under the overpass and run parallel to the highway,” said a civilian official.
