Bird Flu Kerala: TN Govt steps up vigil in border areas

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has stepped up vigil across the border areas after bird flu was reported in Kerala.

An official said the vigil has been stepped up in Anaikatti, Gopalapuram and Wallier areas.

“Each checkpoint in these areas is manned by 12 policemen. Every vehicle entering Tamil Nadu is thoroughly searched,” the official said.

Animal husbandry officials in Tamil Nadu told IANS that whenever bird flu cases are reported from neighboring states, the department increases vigilance.

The sources said that doctors, veterinarians and members of the paramedic team are also part of the search teams at the state borders.

Any vehicle with poultry and animals must not cross the checkpoints.

An official said that the state government is not taking any risk and is disinfecting all vehicles from Kerala, entering Tamil Nadu.

He also said that there are 1252 poultry farms in Coimbatore district bordering Kerala. The official said that with such a large number of poultry farms in the district, the department is taking extra precautions to prevent any outbreak in the state.

The Kerala Health Department has culled 21,000 ducks in the two panchayats (Adathua and Cherutuna) in Alappuzha district and also culled domestic birds within a radius of one kilometer from these two panchayats.
