Dumbarton Road

This is the Westside Tavern’s first summer in business after setting up shop next door to Kelvinhall Underground Station late last year.

The ‘watering hole and restaurant’ from the team behind the Locale on North Street is modeled on a New York dive bar with an industrial-looking backyard space complete with a scattering of flame heaters on for when the night inevitably starts to cool down.

For drinks? Pina Colada ‘Tap Tail’ with Bacardi Caribbean Spice, Bacardi Coconut, pineapple and coconut is sunshine in a sip.

And if a food menu full of sharing pizzas and Italian small plates calls to you, take a look at what the Herald’s own Ron Mackenna had to say about a visit to the Tavern, here.

North Street

Often called one of the best outdoor drinking spots in Glasgow city centre, and rightly so.

The dark and moody gastropub in Charing Cross is inspired by the work of American author Charles Bukowski, and leads to a cozy courtyard split across two levels.

Anyone feeling the almost tropical effects of 20-degree heat should turn to their cocktail menu for the latest seasonal creations, best enjoyed outdoors.

The Herald:

The Great Western Road

A new addition to the West End, Secession finds a home in the former Lansdowne Church on Great Western Road which is also home to the Webster Theater and Bar.

Named after the Viennese Secession art movement, the space is full of fascinating nods to the building’s 19th century past while a sun-facing outdoor area is perfect for people-watching.

Sharing plates and cocktails are the order of the day and a summer barbecue is said to be planned for every weekend of the season.

Glasgow Green

Templeton’s grade A listed building overlooking Glasgow Green is directly inspired by the Doge’s Palace in Venice and was once home to James Templeton’s carpet factory.

These days, however, it is used for an eclectic mix of flats, offices and the West Brewery bar and restaurant.

If you’re quick enough to take a nap on one of their picnic benches, order a pint of malty Heidi-Weisse which has unexpected, but highly enjoyable tasting notes of banana and clove.

Pollokshaws Road

Trains to and from Queen’s Park Station often wander past this bar and kitchen which serves a Caribbean menu of spiced Pots and rich Dutch Jerk.

Their back garden space feels far removed from the busy pavements of Pollokshaws Road where sun-starved Southsiders scramble for an outdoor seat in the warmer months.

Ashton Lane

For those who can’t resist the lure of fairy lights and Instagram-friendly fire pits, Brel on Ashton Lane is a sure bet with an impressive range of Belgian bottled beers.

The bar’s substantial outdoor area attracts a huge level of interest any time a blue sky appears with the opportunity to go all out kitsch by booking a more al fresco toasting session.

North Fredrick Street

A favorite of many Glasgow students, The Ark has recently been completely refurbished and boasts the ‘biggest beer garden in the city centre’.

It’s cheap and cheerful with a surprisingly good vegan menu for anyone struggling to cope with conflicting dietary requests.

Calton’s entrance

Benefiting enormously from the lively atmosphere of the nearby Barras Market in the city’s East End, BAaD has a substantial ‘yard’ area which comes alive during the summer months.

Live music is a regular fixture in the casual space that uses shipping containers to create a blistering sun trap.

Asthon Lane

It’s far from a boozy beer garden, but the Rooftop Terrace at the ubiquitous Chip has earned its reputation as a Glasgow institution for a reason.

The intimate spot nestled on the rooftops of Ashton Lane is the only one of its kind in the West End with back-up cover in case the weather turns.

Sauchiehall Lane

A bit of a hidden gem in the heart of Glasgow, tackling a few flights of stairs at Malones on Sauchiehall Lane will lead you to an urban roof terrace.

Ideal for city center office workers who have spent the day wishing for a pint in hand glued to their desks.
