Officials at Calgary International Airport say they are aware of a foul smell in the area, but say there is no risk to public safety.

The Calgary Airport Authority says the stench is mainly from glycol, which is used to de-ice planes during the winter.

Decaying sediment and organic matter in stormwater ponds at the airport can also emit a sulfuric odor, officials said.

In a statement, YYC said the odors “do not pose a risk to public health or the environment.”

“Calgary Airport Authority, Calgary Fire Department and City of Calgary environmental monitoring staff regularly sample the water and air when odors are present. Although these smells are strongest outdoors, they can also be noticeable indoors, including across parts of the terminal. “

Officials said that the changing weather had made the situation much worse because “more than usual deicing fluid” was needed.

YYC said its annual stormwater restoration and maintenance strategy has helped combat the lingering odor.
