Australia is in shock as another stabbing incident is reported from Sydney
Sydney: In another shocking incident, a bishop and several other worshipers were stabbed by a man during a church service broadcast online in Sydney on Monday evening (local time).
In a video that has now gone viral on social media, a man could be seen attacking Bishop Mar Marie Emmanuel at a church in Weekley before being subdued by locals.
New South Wales (NSW) Police said the injured suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital.
“A man has been arrested who remains in police custody. A large police response is underway and the public is urged to avoid the area,” a statement released by NSW Police said.
Local media reported that hundreds of people had gathered outside the crime scene, where the situation remained tense.
This is the second major stabbing incident reported from the city in a few days.
On Saturday, six people were stabbed to death by an assailant who was later shot dead by police at a prominent shopping center in the city’s eastern suburbs.
With as many as five people still in hospital, including one critically injured, flags flew at half-mast in Australia on Monday as citizens tried to come to terms with the shocking events in the city.
“Events like this require a review of what needs to be done and what can be done in the future. It needs to be done in a balanced way based on correct assessments,” said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albany in a radio interview.
