The incident happened on May 21, 2022

On May 21, 2022, the police station in Tadarba was set on fire by an angry mob after the death of fishmonger Safikul Islam (39) in police custody. A day after the incident, district administration officials raided seven houses, including those of Safikul and his relatives, in search of weapons and drugs hidden under the houses.

The judge expressed surprise at the action of demolishing the house

In November 2022, the then Chief Justice RM Chhaya pulled the Assam government over the administration’s action. Expressing surprise, he noted that if you need anything tomorrow, you’ll dig up my courtroom. If you surround someone’s house under the guise of an investigation then no one is safe. The court also emphasized that a bulldozer cannot be operated on a house according to any criminal law. Even if an agency is investigating a very serious matter.

Instructions were given to the Ministry of the Interior for an investigation

Judge Chaya called the use of bulldozers on houses equivalent to an act of gang warfare. The Ministry of the Interior was asked to find better ways to conduct its investigation. In January 2023, the Assam government informed the High Court that appropriate action would be taken against the officials found guilty of demolishing the houses of the accused. The High Court then ordered the state government to give compensation to the victims.
