Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhupan Bora has dared Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to step down if Gaurav Gogoi wins the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat.

Speaking to the media at Rajiv Bhawan on April 21, Bora said Gogoi’s win was certain as many sections of people, including the tea garden community, had become disillusioned with the BJP.

“I dare the Prime Minister to step down if Gogoi wins,” Bora said, adding that Sarma had made it a personal agenda to ensure the Congress candidate’s defeat.

Bora also protested Sarma’s dancing on stage during the campaign since the first phase of polls on April 19, alleging that the chief minister had lost his mental balance.

Bora argued that Sarma’s focus on dancing at campaign events instead of addressing key issues like unemployment etc. is not appropriate for someone holding such a high office.
When asked if it was wrong to dance, he said it wasn’t, but in that case the Prime Minister could very well join the films or bands at Behu. He said that politicians are meant to solve people’s problems, not to entertain the public.

Bora also predicted a loss for Sonowal in the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat due to dissatisfaction with the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

To further substantiate his claim, he also cited the Chief Minister’s election campaign in lower Assam when campaigning was still going on for the upper five seats of Assam.
He claimed that this was because the Prime Minister was advised not to go to the Assam town as he would lose face as Sonowal was destined to lose.
The second of the three-phase polls in Assam is on April 26.
