So I went as a congressional worker, as a congressional volunteer, looking for those faces I knew old and looking for new faces that might be able to look me straight in the eye and feel the way I felt. The idea came to my mind because some people often write in their newspapers and magazines that the Congress is dead or dying and I just laughed.
But when I saw these huge crowds coming towards me, I wondered who were all these people, who were talking about the Congress being dead or dying? I wondered if they had any connection with the Indian people, if they knew anything about the people they dared to talk about. Since the Congress is not an instrument for the elections, the Congress is not a mushroom party to run for the elections.
Elections will come and the elections will continue, but the Congress will continue because the roots of the Congress are in generations of work and service, and trouble and suffering – because the Congress is rooted in the hearts of millions of people…
That’s why I came to the conclusion after long and painful thought that Congress has another task, and even though Congress may have fallen into wrong paths here and there, even though in many local places it was in the hands of group cliques, even though factions grew up in Congress that weakened it, even though many members of Congress were lazy and didn’t do much and expected favors, and in all Yet, despite all this, I feel that Congress still had a historic task to fulfill.
