Dimapur: Construction of the longest tunnel of the new Dimapur-Kohima railway project began. The long wait is over. Indian Railways started working. The 82.50 km long Dimapur-Kohima new railway project (2.75 km in Assam and 79.75 km in Nagaland) starting from Dhansiri station in Assam to Jubja near Kohima, is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 6,663 crore. The project has 08 new stations namely Dhansiri, Dhansiripar, Shokhuvi, Molvam, Ferima, Pifema, Menguzuma and Jubja respectively. The project includes 27 large bridges, 148 small bridges, 05 roads over bridges, 15 roads under bridges and 21 tunnels of 31 km length.
The 16.5 km stretch from Dhansiri to Shokhuvi has already been completed in October 2021. Passenger train services from Shokhuvi to Nahralgun in Arunachal and Mendipathar in Meghalaya have been launched recently. Once this new rail link project is completed, it will be possible to easily transport food grains, petroleum products, automobiles and various infrastructure and construction materials to Nagaland at much cheaper rates than at present. This development is expected to be of great benefit to the local people, as it will significantly improve the state’s economy and provide a cheap and reliable means of communication to the local people.
