Researchers have found evidence of a majestic serpent that roamed the ancient land of India around 47 million years ago. The remains of the serpent Vasuki, mentioned in the Mahabharata and Bhagavata, adorning the neck of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva, have been discovered. Vasuki, the king of serpents of that time, has been recognized by researchers today as Vasuki Indicus. (Ancestors Rise)

Big enough to dwarf pythons, anacondas, and longer than a school bus, Vasuki indicus is believed to be one of the largest snakes to have ever existed. With endless scientific curiosity, researchers have tried to unravel the existence of this ancient snake.

There were 27 fossils in the mine
According to a study report recently published in the British scientific journal Nature, the rattlesnake is a slow ambush predator. The two authors of the report, who are based at the Roorkee Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Uttarakhand, came to this conclusion after analyzing 27 fossils found in a coal mine in Gujarat.

Research since 2005
The saga began with the discovery of Vasuki Indicus in 2005. A collection of fossilized vertebrae was initially mistaken for the remains of an ancient crocodile-like creature. It wasn’t until 2023 that researchers found information about the remains of an ancient serpent that was surprising in size and majesty. These fossils provide clues about the size, habitat and behavior of the organisms.

How big was the snake?
“There are several possible reasons for the large size of the Vasuki snake. They lived in a favorable environment with plenty of food resources. The lack of natural predators also contributed to the creature’s enormous size, Debajit Dutta, a postdoctoral fellow at IIT Roorkee, and Sunil Bajpai, an associate professor of paleontology, told CNN. A warmer climate than the present may also have contributed to the size of the snakes, he said.

50 feet long!
Based on the size of the preserved vertebrae, the snake was 10.9 meters (36 ft) to 15.2 meters (50 ft) long. Based on two different calculation methods, the researchers estimated that it had a wide and cylindrical body.

Living in the country
Vasuki indicus may have lived on land rather than in water like anacondas. But because of his size he probably couldn’t climb trees. He cautioned that estimates of the size of the vasuki snake need to be checked carefully because it does not have a complete skeleton. However, they suggested that Vasuki indicus could be as large as Titanoboa, the largest snake species currently found.
