A six-line Kannada Inscription of the time of the Vijayanagara kings was discovered during the construction of the Vijayanagar canal project near the Hulagi Dam near Hola Mudlapura in Koppal taluk.
The inscription is located on the embankment next to the nearby dam at Mudlapura, a tributary of the Tiger Dam built across the Tungabhadra River. It is 14 cubits long and 3 cubits wide and is a six-line Kannada inscription. This inscription would have been submerged by the torrential water. The inscription was found because the rain was less this year.
This is how it was discovered
Karnataka Irrigation Corporation, Vijayanagar Canal Modernization Project, Tungabhadra Reservoir No. 1 Division, Munirabad informed about the presence of legislation in carrying out the work by Mallikarjuna Hospalya, Communication and Documentation Specialist, Vijayanagara Canal Project, State Archaeological Museums Heritage Department. When Dr. undertook R. Shejeshwar, Deputy Director of Heritage Department of Kamalpur-Hampia State Archaeological Museum and Dr. R. Manjanaika, Archaeological Assistant with the field work. A six-line inscription dating back to the Vijayanagara kings was discovered.
Summary of the legislation
The inscription is satisfied by immersion in water. But the inscription could be read and understood, and Mahapradha of the Vijayanagara kings, Nagannadannanayaka, built a wall across the Tungabhadra river at a place called Kalaur, to the north-west of Malinathdeva. This kata is referred to as Huligiyakatti. From this inscription it is known that a canal was built from here and the water was channeled to the famous religious site of Huligi through the mouth of the canal. It also contains a reference to the canal. Further study of the legislation is underway by the Department.
