The Jammu and Kashmir administration has started the restoration of the 8th century Marthanda Sun Temple (Rising Ancestors) dedicated to the Sun God at Anantnag in South Kashmir. There is a possibility of installing a statue of Lalitaditya Muktapeda, the emperor of the Gonanda dynasty in Kashmir state, in the building of Martand Sun Temple Anantnag.
According to reports, Neeraj Pandit, Under Secretary to Government, has issued a notification in this regard. A high-level meeting has been scheduled on April 1 to discuss the conservation of the temple and the installation of the statue.
Establishment of ‘Kalash’ of Ayodhya
The purpose of restoring the temple is to preserve the cultural and religious heritage of Kashmir. In a symbolic gesture, Ayodhya’s ‘Kalash’ has been installed at the Ram Mandir on the Surya Temple site ahead of the dedication ceremony on January 22. Local people installed the ‘Kalash’ in the presence of devotees from Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

The high-level meeting began after Jammu and Kashmir Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha visited Marthanda Surya Temple and offered prayers. Participated in ‘Mahayaga’ organized by Sri Marthanda Theertha Trust.
History of Marthana Surya Temple
Protected under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), this temple is believed to be the oldest Sun Temple. The Marthanda Sun Temple is said to have been destroyed during the reign of Sikandar Shah Miri between 1389 and 1413. Marthanda Surya Temple is dedicated to Surya, the main solar deity of Hinduism. Surya is also known as Martanda in Sanskrit language.
Built by King Lalitaditya Muktapeda
King Lalitaditya Muktapida of the Karkota dynasty built the Sun Temple in the 8th century. This temple is a symbol of Kashmiri architecture and spirit. In Rajatarangini, the historian Kalhana refers to the reign of Lalitaditya as “a period of prosperity and cultural prosperity in the region”. Despite its historical importance, the Muslim ruler Miri was responsible for the destruction of this temple.

The Marthanda Sun Temple at a height of 5,400 feet above sea level is built under the patronage of Lalitaditya and incorporates the principles of Vastu science to ensure that the sun’s rays illuminate the sun idol throughout the day.
