Recently, the Archaeological Survey of India team unearthed rare artefacts dating back almost 400 years to the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. These artefacts have come to light during a scientific excavation (Ancestors Rising) at Raigad Fort in Maharashtra. This is the first time that this fort, which sheds light on the history of the Maratha Empire, has seen such a variety of artefacts intact without being damaged in any way.
Among the finds were weapons including a damaged sword fragment and spearhead, copper coins, horseshoes, porcelain and lamps.
Wada’s first scientific excavation
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Superintending Archaeologist Mumbai Circle Dr. Shubha Majumdar said, “This is WADA’s first scientific dig at Raigad Fort. It offers an insight into the advanced building techniques of the period. It also revealed traces of bathing and washing areas, a well-designed drainage system and a secret exit believed to be an escape route during battles.”
A stone platform was discovered
A stone platform was also found during the excavation. The researchers speculated that it was probably the foundation of a larger structure with rooms and wooden pillar foundations. This research provides a more comprehensive understanding of WADA’s oversight.
