Rare idol similar to Channakesavan idols found!
Recently, a rare idol similar to the famous Channakesavan idol of Hoysala temple in Belur was found during sand mining in Old Belur of Sakaleshpur taluk. Local people noticed the idol when a bulldozer used to extract sand on the banks of Hemavati river accidentally hit the idol.
The beautifully carved 4.5 feet black stone idol bears the stamp of the 12th century Hoysala dynasty sculptors. After this, he stopped the earthmoving machine and raised the issue with the local people there.

The Channakesava Temple was built in Old Belur during the Hoysala Dynasty. Kumar HC, Superintendent of Archaeological Museum, Hassan, visited the scene and installed the idol in the Channakesava temple building, which is being restored.
The villagers were asked to hand over the idol to the museum. Broken idols cannot be worshipped. The news of the fall of the idol spread like wildfire and the villagers rushed to the spot and pulled it out safely. Then Tandu placed it in front of the village temple. People have started worshiping the idol. The villagers have demanded that the officials of the archeology department give permission to keep the idol inside the temple.
