Anant Singh gets 15-day parole, much speculation on timing ahead of Munger polls Achi-News

Patna: Bihar gangster-turned-politician and 5-time MLA from Makkah, Anant Singh, popularly known as ‘Chahot Sarkar’, was released from Patna’s Bir Central Jail on a 15-day parole on Sunday, officials said.

Police beefed up security measures after a huge crowd of Singh’s supporters gathered outside the Byor Jail on receiving information about his release, to avoid any untoward incident. More than 100 SUVs were seen in Anant’s processions between Patna and Mokme.

The Mukma assembly constituency falls under the Munger Lok Sabha and its election is scheduled on May 13.

Singh is convicted and faces 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in two separate Arms Act cases.

Singh appeared on August 23, 2019 before Saket Metropolitan Magistrate Harun Pratap in Delhi in a dramatic turn of surrender after the Patna police filed a case against him under the Anti-Terrorism, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act. 2019.

The police on a specific information raided Singh’s native village Ladama under Bara police station in Patna village on August 16, 2019 and seized one AK-47 assault rifle, two hand grenades and live cartridges from there.

Police said the AK 47 rifle was covered in carbon to prevent detection by metal detectors.

According to Jail Superintendent Byor Jitendra Kumar, Singh was released on a condition granted by the state home department for settlement of his ancestral land. However, political circles are reeling from rumors linking his release ahead of the Munger parliamentary elections to help Janata Dal (United) candidate Rajeev Ranjan, alias Lalan Singh.

“The timing will definitely raise eyebrows as the land settlement could have been done after a month. But this is the way Nitish Kumar (Bihar Chief Minister) is functioning and nothing will change the course of the election this time because of the growing support of the people for Tejashwi Prasad Yadav [Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and Leader of the Opposition in Bihar Legislative Assembly]who took on the power of the BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party]RJD leader Shakti Singh Yadav said.

It may be noted that RJD has fielded Anita Devi, wife of dreaded gangster Ashok Mehto from Munger Lok Sabha. Anant’s wife Neelam Devi won an assembly seat on an RJD ticket, however, she extended support to Nitish Kumar, along with another politician’s son Chetan Anand, of Anand Mohan of the Congress during the floor test. Mohan’s wife is also a Mosehar candidate on the JD-U ticket.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha, Devi contested against Lalan Singh from Munger on a Congress ticket but lost.

Former MLA Anant has developed a Robin Hood image in his constituency and is known for helping patients from his surroundings get admitted to hospitals in Patna and Delhi.

Anan has a long criminal record and is facing 38 criminal charges including seven murders, eleven attempted murders and four kidnappings.

It is said that Anant is one of the most controversial politicians in the country in the last four decades. He won five times from Mokama district – three times on a JD(U) ticket, the fourth time as an independent candidate, and the fifth time on an RJD ticket in 2020.

The Patna MP-MLA court on July 21, 2022, sentenced former Anan to 10 years in prison for recovering a bulletproof jacket and six magazines from his official apartment in 2015.

On July 18, 2023, the management of the prison in Bor registered a first information report (FIR) against 31 people, including Anant, in connection with an attempt to break into the prison, attack the prison staff, steal keys to the gates and ensure the escape of prisoners.

In the FIR, the government alleged that the former MLA tried to put pressure on the jail staff and the escape of inmates, which led to attacks on the jail staff by his supporters.
