There is a long-standing dispute between the Mitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. On this, Home Minister Amit Shah said that in order to bring about permanent peace in Manipur, the government is working to remove the lack of trust between the Mitai and Kuki communities. After the Lok Sabha elections, the process will be expedited as a top priority.
This is not a riot but a racial conflict
In an interview, when asked ‘should the government take some stringent steps to end the cycle of violence in the northeastern state’, Shah said that what is happening in Manipur is neither a riot nor any terrorist violence. The conflict between the Mitei and Kuki communities is ethnic in nature. It cannot be solved by force. The violence occurred due to a lack of discussion and trust between the two communities.
There will be no violence in the future
Shah said we have to restore trust between the two communities. It takes time. We worked on it quickly but then the elections came. This caused delays. Leaders of both communities talk about their community interests or their political issues. But after the votes are counted, the government will act on it as a high priority. I am sure there will be no violence in the future.
