Two Nova Scotia men have died after a boat they were traveling in sank in the Annapolis River in Granville Centre, NS, on Monday.

At approximately 5:30 pm, Annapolis District RCMP, along with firefighters, Ground Search and Rescue crews and members of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC), responded to a report of a 14-foot vessel that had sunk with four people on board.

Upon arrival, RCMP learned that two people, a 46-year-old man from Granville Center and a 27-year-old man from Weymouth, NS, had swum from the sunken boat and reached shore safely.

A police news release Tuesday afternoon said three fire service search boats, a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter and a JRCC C-130 Hercules fixed-wing aircraft were dispatched to the scene.

“We got a call from 911 dispatch asking for help finding missing boaters in the Annapolis Royal area, so with that phone call, we sent our plane,” said Nicole Lively with the JRCC.

At around 11pm, a third person, a 49-year-old man from Granville Centre, was found by a search boat. He was taken to a Kentville, NS hospital, where he later died as a result of his injuries.

The RCMP say search efforts are continuing through the night for the fourth man.

Around midnight, police say the remains of a 26-year-old man from Granville Center were discovered and discovered.

“Investigators are gathering all the witness statements and information at the scene and anyone who saw the incident is welcome to come forward… provide a statement to police,” said Guillaume Tremblay with the Nova Scotia RCMP.

At this time, police believe alcohol was a factor.

The investigation is ongoing.
