Guwahati: Assam AIUDF MLA Karim Uddin Barbuya has raised concerns about the lack of government facilities for Haj pilgrims from the state, despite Assam sending one of the highest numbers of Haj pilgrims every year. Barbuya stressed that an average of 4,000 pilgrims Pilgrims from Masam embark on the Hajj pilgrimage every year, but face significant difficulties due to the lack of adequate accommodation in Guwahati.

"Pilgrims from across the country gather in Guwahati to begin their journey to Saudi Arabia, but the city does not have enough government-supported accommodation. There is only a private facility available, which cannot accommodate the large numbers," Barboia said.

He mentioned that although he had made personal arrangements for some pilgrims, it was not enough to meet the demand. Barbuya urged the state government to take immediate action to ensure that Haj pilgrims do not face any inconvenience.

"There are luxurious facilities for the Hajj pilgrims in Kolkata, which enable them to travel to Mecca-Madinah without any hassle. Assam should provide similar support," he claimed.

Additionally, AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal pointed out that Haj pilgrims from Assam have to pay an additional fee of ₹51,000 for boarding the plane from Guwahati. "Why should pilgrims from Assam be charged more compared to those from other states?" Ajamal asked.

He wrote to the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs and requested a refund of the additional charges paid by the pilgrims of Assam.
