With the help of artificial intelligence (AI), the path and intensity of devastating storms can be predicted with increasing accuracy. A study based on an analysis of Hurricane Ciaran, which hit Europe in November 2023, compared artificial intelligence and traditional means of weather forecasting, where this was reflected. The University of Reading study, published in NPJ Climate & Atmospheric Science, highlights the potential of AI in weather forecasting. Ciaran killed 16 people in northern Europe and left more than a million homes in France without power.

Better than traditional predictive models

The researchers used four AI models for comparison. AI models developed by technology giants such as Google, Nvidia and Huawei were able to predict and track the intensity of the storm up to 48 hours in advance. The researchers said the predictions are undetectable by traditional forecasting models.

save money and time

The researchers say there is an urgent need to further explore the use of artificial intelligence in weather forecasting to better protect people from extreme weather such as Hurricane Ciaran. The development of machine learning models may mean that AI will be routinely used in weather forecasting in the near future, saving time and money.

Accurate global forecast for 10 days in minutes

According to the researchers, modern machine learning techniques were rarely used to predict the weather two years ago. We now have several models that can produce a 10-day global forecast in minutes.

Also study atmospheric conditions

The AI model also pinpointed the large-scale atmospheric conditions that drove Ciaran’s explosive growth. As such its position relative to the jet stream results in a narrow corridor of strong winds and at high altitude. During the experiment, machine learning techniques underestimated the hurricane’s damaging winds.
