The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has caught a diplomat from Afghanistan smuggling gold from the Mumbai airport. 25 kg of gold was returned from the diplomat. The value of the smuggled gold is estimated at 18.6 million rupees. According to media reports, the diplomat was identified as Zakia Wardak.

DRI returned 25 kg of gold from Diplomat

According to the report of the English newspaper Times of India, the incident took place on April 25, when the diplomat of Afghanistan Zakia Wardak arrived from Dubai to Mumbai airport with her son. DRI officials received intelligence about gold smuggling even before the Afghan diplomat reached Mumbai. In such a situation, DRI has deployed many of its officers at Mumbai airport. As soon as the lady diplomat left the airport after landing at the Mumbai airport, DRI officials arrested the lady diplomat and her son. DRI officials asked the diplomat whether he has any dutiable goods? So the diplomat denied having such an item with him.

A diplomat was not arrested despite smuggling

DRI searched the diplomat’s luggage, but nothing was found. An officer then took the diplomat to a separate room and searched him. During the search, gold bars were found from the diplomat’s coat, leggings, etc. However, nothing was found of the diplomatic woman. DRI confiscated the recovered gold. However, the Afghan diplomat was not arrested because she had diplomatic immunity. DRI registered the case and started further investigation.

Diplomat resigned

The diplomat resigned from her position. In the letter, she said, ‘I am announcing my resignation from the Consulate General of Afghanistan in India and from all my posts with effect from May 5, 2024. She said that women who want to advance in Afghan society face challenges. I have been slandered many times. I faced slander. Attacks were also carried out against members of my family. There were personal comments about me, I am not hurt by it but I am hurt by the attacks on my loved ones. He further said, ‘It is my passion to serve my country and contribute to positive change. I made the difficult decision to resign from my current position.

In the letter, she further said, ‘I express my gratitude to the Government of India, which has always supported me. I have been working with Indians for the past three years. Willingly. I wish that in the future women will receive support and respect, where opportunities for progress will be received instead of hostility and stigmatization.
