The calendar may say it’s April, but residents of southwestern Quebec are bracing for a blizzard.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued snowfall warnings for Montreal, areas south of the city towards the US border, Lorraine and the Eastern Townships.

A low in Colorado moves into the county on Wednesday.

Montreal should see increasing clouds during the day, with rain beginning in the afternoon.

With a drop in temperatures during the evening hours, the rain is expected to turn to snow.

Steady snow is expected through Thursday.

Montreal could see between 15 and 20 cm of snow, while the eastern towns are bracing for an accumulation of 15 to 25 cm.

Light snow is expected to continue through Friday morning, but could change to rain as temperatures climb above freezing.

A rapid melt is expected as milder weather comes into the weekend. Today’s highs may climb into double digits by Sunday, and the trend is expected to continue into next week.

Although it may not be welcomed, snow in April is not unusual.

Montreal typically sees about 13 cm of snow throughout the month, and the city has experienced massive storms in the past.

The largest snowfall on an April 1 day was 33.9 cm on April 9, 2000.
