A shocking 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan Achi-News

GUWAHATI: A strong earthquake hit Taipei, the capital of Taiwan on April 3, with a magnitude of 7.2, the strongest in 25 years.

According to reports, the earthquake claimed seven lives and left hundreds injured. The earthquake hit the hardest in eastern Hualien County, where buildings collapsed and people were trapped. The quake also triggered a tsunami warning for southern Japan and the Philippines that was later lifted.

Taiwan Plus News posted an update on X saying, "Seven people were killed and 736 injured after the Hualien earthquake. 77 people remained trapped."

According to reports, the fire department said 77 people remained trapped, some of them in buildings in Hualien.

The quake was centered just off the east coast at a depth of 15.5 km (9.6 miles), according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration.

Japan’s weather agency, which put the quake at 7.7, said several small tsunami waves reached parts of the southern prefecture of Okinawa, according to reports.

The Philippine Seismological Agency also issued a warning to residents in the coastal areas of several provinces, urging them to evacuate to higher ground.

Taiwan’s official Central News Agency said the quake was the biggest to hit the island since 1999, when a 7.6-magnitude temblor killed about 2,400 people and destroyed or damaged 50,000 buildings in one of Taiwan’s worst earthquakes on record.
