Patna (August 20): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union Minister Giriraj Singh, who is contesting re-election from Begusarai Lok Sabha constituency, owns movable and immovable assets worth Rs 10.16 crore. His wife owns movable and immovable assets worth 4.15 crores. Singh on Friday filed his nomination papers as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate from the Begusarai parliamentary seat. In the fourth phase, the polling for Begusarai, Darbanga, Ujiarpur, Samastipur and Mungar Lok Sabha constituencies in Bihar will be held on May 13.

In the affidavit filed before the Returning Officer along with the nomination papers, Singh has stated that he owns movable property worth Rs 2.09 crore and immovable property worth Rs 8.07 crore. Singh’s wife owns movable property worth Rs 1.25 crore and immovable property worth Rs 2.90 crore. According to the affidavit, the Union Minister has 1.96 lakh cash while his wife has 1.46 lakh cash. Singh’s mobile assets include money deposited in his two bank accounts and gold jewelery worth Rs 1.10 lakh. The movable assets owned by his wife include money deposited in six bank accounts and gold and silver jewelery worth Rs 7.5 lakh.

According to the affidavit, Singh’s immovable properties include his ancestral properties. In the affidavit, the income for the year 2023-2024 is Rs 16,61,990. Singh is up against Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate Awadhesh Rai, who is the Grand Alliance candidate. In 2019, BJP leader Jawaharlal Nehru defeated former student union president Kanhaiya Kumar by over four lakh votes. Kumar had contested the last Lok Sabha elections on a CPI ticket. This time he is contesting on a Congress ticket from the North East Delhi parliamentary seat in the national capital.

Singh served as the Minister for Cooperation in the Government of Bihar from 2005 to 2010 and as the Minister for Animal Husbandry from 2010 to 2013. He became a Cabinet Minister in the Union Ministry of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries in May 2019. He became the Union Minister for Rural Development in July 2021.
