A new outlet for cans and bottles has opened in time for Earth Day at 1301 Beaubien Street in Rosemont-le-Petit-Patrie.

The consignment center is the first of hundreds planned for the island of Montreal and the province. The kiosk has recycling machines and staff to help you exchange your bottles and cans for cash on the spot.

How It Works? Easy – just insert the aluminum, plastic or glass disposable bottles and cans. They go into the same machine and you get cash right away. The machine will sort a bag of unsorted beverage containers and people can redeem their money by electronic transfer if they’ve downloaded the Consignaction app.

Maryse Taupier, Consignation’s chief operating officer, says it’s all about increasing yields.

Taupier says this modernization of Quebec’s deposit refund system means more containers can be accepted for recycling — nearly 2.5 billion containers.

It says plans are to receive five 5 billion containers starting March 1, 2025. Consignment already has a larger center in Granby that welcomes 250 people a day who want to recycle their containers for cash.

The Quebec Beverage Container Recycling Association says the province has a return rate of 73% and is aiming for 90% by 2032. By then, hundreds more neighborhood recycling stations will be scattered across the province.

Until March 2025, glass bottles of 500ml and above will also be returned with a $0.25 deposit.
