A driver who allegedly hit the SA police officer has been charged with attempted murder Achi-News

A man who is suspected of hitting a police officer and running inside South Australia was charged with attempted murder.

Brevet Sergeant Mark Woods, a distinguished police officer, was pulled over by a 43-year-old Victorian man during a traffic stop on Checkpoint Road near Occulta.

The Ororo officer, known locally as “Woodsey”, was flown to Adelaide, where he is still recovering from a concussion and broken ribs.

Sergeant Woods attempted to pull over a Holden SUV around 3pm yesterday in the mid north.

A witness told 9News the Holden’s tires were spiked and it veered off the road, allegedly hitting Sergeant Woods before driving away.

The police said that the vehicle then left the scene and was tracked from the air as it continued south on the checkpoint road.

The alleged driver continued for 60 kilometers until they stopped north of Helt around 3:45 p.m.

The Ororo community rallied around Sergeant Woods, with locals describing him as a pillar of the community.

Police said Sergeant Woods is recovering well in hospital with his fiancee and two children at his bedside.

In addition to attempted murder, he was charged with endangering life, dangerous driving to escape a police chase, leaving the scene of an accident and other traffic offenses.

The man will appear in court on Tuesday.
