A video circulating on social media of a young girl being hit by a bicycle is urging cyclists to be safer when riding in dense residential areas.

In the video, a four-year-old girl is seen crossing rue Jean-Mans in Montreal’s Plateau neighborhood to board a school bus that has stopped on the other side of the street. The bus is not at the intersection, but the school bus’s flashing stop sign has been extended.

The bike path runs parallel to the street parking lane. Cyclists ride on the path facing the opposite direction of traffic on the one-way street. The girl looks to her right, but when crossing the bike path, she was hit by a cyclist in the opposite direction. If she had looked to the left, she might not have seen the bike as a parked SUV was blocking the view.

The boy immediately got up, seemingly unharmed. The cyclist, who fell from his bike, also appeared to be unharmed.

Local resident Meyer Feig posted the video that his friend sent him.

“This is not the first time this has happened, including to my son,” he wrote in X. Feig said he spoke with the young girl’s father who said she was shaken but not injured.

Feig told CTV News he posted the video because he wanted to raise awareness for cyclists to use caution in high-density residential areas.

He lives nearby and parks on the street. He said visibility is an issue with the bike lane.

“It doesn’t make sense,” he said. “You can’t see a cyclist going down the street.”
