A terrible tragedy occurred in the African country of the Central African Republic. 50 people died when the boat capsized. This incident took place in Bangui, the capital of the country. The incident happened while people were going to a funeral in the village. After the incident, the Central African Republic called for measures to improve river traffic security.
Officials said they were called within 40 minutes of the incident. The head of the Civil Defense Department, Thomas Zimasa, said rescue teams found 50 bodies. It was learned that the search operation is still ongoing in Mpoko River. He said the search was on for several others lost in the river.
Eyewitnesses say there were up to 300 people on the boat at the time of the accident. The accident occurred when the village elder died and was on his way to an area 45 km from Bangui for his last rites. The death toll is expected to rise further. It took 40 minutes for the rescuers to arrive after the accident. Local boats and fishermen who were already there began efforts to rescue the people.
