The ground water level in Ranchi has been continuously decreasing for the past few years. According to the Central Ground Water report, the ground water level has dropped by more than 10 meters in many areas. In the last decade, groundwater exploitation has increased due to the rapid construction of multi-storey buildings. But, the Municipal Corporation has given permission to exploit ground water by collecting only one and a half times the holding tax from multi-storied buildings. According to the data given by the Municipal Corporation in the High Court, a rainwater harvesting system has not been made in 62 out of 710 multi-storey buildings in the city. There are arrangements for rainwater conservation in 648 buildings.
