RAICHUR: For the 45-year-old Anumnath, Friday’s visit to the village temple was just like the ones he would make any other day. However, little did he know it would be his last.
A resident of Jalibanchi village in Raichor taluk asked for some water on his return home, but before his family members could fetch it, he collapsed on the ground and died as the toll due to extreme heat and sunstroke across the district reached five.
The heat even caused a car fire in Schättinger on Saturday.
In Huda village, under Mukunda gram panchayat of Sindhanur taluk, when the mercury level touched 45 degrees Celsius, four people died due to extreme heat. Dehydration. Veeresh Hanumanthappa Madiwal, 50, collapsed when he went to wash clothes. Gangama Devadasi, 60, and Pradeep Thammana Pujari, 15, a differently-abled person, died in their sleep, while Durgma Hanumantappa Upar, 60, died of sunstroke.
Prof Shantappa Dutargamvi of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur Meteorological Unit, said a week of intense heat is wreaking havoc in the district, with the mercury touching 45 degrees Celsius on May 4. “High temperatures and hot winds will continue until May 8. Farmers and the general public should stay indoors until then,” he advised.
Any death that is not due to heat: Faded
Commenting on the prevailing situation, District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Suresh Babu said, “All the deaths reported in Sindhanur and Raichur taluks are not due to heat alone. Some of them can be related to the disease. However, three deaths were confirmed to have been caused by dehydration. The medical team is investigating these cases.”
In a strange incident, a car traveling on the RaichurHyderabad Expressway suddenly caught fire in Shaktingar. The driver immediately pulled over to the side and managed to get out of the vehicle just in time. By the time the fire crews arrived at the scene and extinguished the flame, the car was reduced to ashes.
