Kolkata: Lok Sabha elections are being held across the country, including the three centers of Bengal. The first phase of voting is underway in Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri in the state. The biggest challenge for the commission is to hold the polls smoothly.

Assailants have already allegedly opened fire at a booth in East Imphal, Manipur. Allegations of Trinamool-BJP stone pelting have also been raised in Cooch Behar in Bengal. However, amid all these isolated disturbances, polling in Bengal till 11 am was 33 per cent.

Apart from Bengal, four seats in Bihar, six seats in Uttarakhand and Maharashtra, eight seats in Uttar Pradesh, 12 seats in Rajasthan, two seats each in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Andaman and Nicobar, Voting is taking place today in one seat each from Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweep and Puducherry. Tamil Nadu has the highest percentage of voters. Voting is underway in 39 constituencies today.

Voting has begun in 102 constituencies in 21 states and union territories in the first phase of the Lok Sabha. This is the largest episode in terms of seats. Voting will continue until 6pm. Security has been tightened. Besides the central forces, the Election Commission has also entrusted the state police to poll in various centres. After that, another vote will be held on April 26.
