On its current path, ex-hurricane Kirk would hit the south and east of Scotland but most of the disturbance would be felt further south.

However, it is possible that the path could change and the storm could instead have its most powerful impact on France.

(Photo: Met Office) Chris Bulmer, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Kirk over the North Atlantic will lose its hurricane status early next week before being swept into NW Europe.

“The resulting low pressure system will still have the potential to bring rain and disruptive winds to some areas, including parts of the UK, from the middle of next week.

“There are many details to work out on the exact track and timing of the system. Across the UK, parts of England and Wales look to be at the greatest risk of heavy rain and strong winds during Wednesday and Thursday. However, a more southerly track of this system, which is just as plausible at this point, would see the most disruptive conditions affecting France.

“The need for warnings will be reviewed over the next few days, so it is important to keep up to date with the forecast.”
