New Delhi: Following the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the customs case, the United Nations has criticized India for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Senior BJP leader and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has now opened his mouth. In an interview with Network 18 editor Rahul Joshi, he said, “Who is the UN to say about the Indian elections”? The opposition asked the question, “If the arrest is illegal, why does the court not release”?

Taking a dig at the UN, Rajnath first said, “Who is the UN to say about India’s election?” Hasn’t there been a free and fair election in the country before? Didn’t vote correctly in 2019? Not in 2014? I say, even before 2014 there were free and fair elections in India. Why is this issue being raised all of a sudden”? After that, Rajnath washed the opponents. His question, “Suppose the agency mistakenly arrests the prime minister or the deputy prime minister. Then why is the court not granting them bail”?

Last week, a spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Stephen Dujarric, said when asked if ‘political unrest’ was brewing in the country ahead of the Lok Sabha elections following the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the seizure of the bank accounts of the opposition Congress , “India is going to have elections like any other country. We expect political and civil rights to be protected. Citizens can vote in a free and fair environment”.

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar gave a counter-reaction after that. Dismissing the senior UN official’s comments, he said the country does not need any global organization for free and fair elections. Not only that, when he was asked about the Indian election during a press conference at the United Nations, his reply was, “a purposeful question”. Similarly, India also gave stern words to America for commenting on Kejriwal’s arrest. Senior US diplomats were also called. The central government wants an explanation as to why such comments are made. Earlier, New Delhi had summoned the Deputy Chief of the German Mission to protest the German Foreign Ministry’s comments on Kejriwal’s arrest.
