While selecting the squad for the Asia Cup, there are many problems before the selectors

The Indian squad for the Asia Cup will be selected next week. The announcement is likely to be made after the conclusion of the five-match T20I series against the West Indies. With young Turks like Deepak Hooda, Arshdeep Singh and Sanju Samson proving their mettle in recent tournaments, the task of finalizing the 15-man squad for the tournament will not be easy for the selectors.

With veterans Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul back in the squad, the selectors will have to deal with a lot of problems as there are only a few spots to fill in the squad.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik are almost certain to feature in the batting department. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja are likely to field as pure all-rounders. Meanwhile, the bowling duties will be shared between Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel.

But the remaining three seats will be decided by the selectors. With Deepak Chahar, Kuldeep Yadav eligible for selection and players like Axar Patel, Hooda, Arshdeep, and R Ashwin showing good form in recent times, the selection will not be easy.

Deepak Chahar was India’s premier bowler for the powerplay in T20Is before a hamstring injury kept him out. In his absence, Bhuvneshwar Kumar cemented his place in the team.

Kuldeep Yadav announced his return to form after taking the first leading wickets of IPL 2022. However, an injury to his right hand ruled him out of the home series against South Africa.

The squad for the Asia Cup will give a clue to the squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia. Rohit and Co will play around a dozen T20Is before the blockbuster clash against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This includes domestic series against South Africa and Australia.

In these 12 games, captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid will want to cover all bases ahead of the marquee ICC tournament. The team management will be keeping a close eye on Virat Kohli’s form and will be waiting a long time for in-form youngsters like Deepak Hooda.
