The arrival of the beautiful pink flowers in spring has been celebrated by people in Japan for centuries, with annual festivals held to mark the occasion.
Discussing the iconic cherry blossoms recently, The Times said: “The Japanese have celebrated the arrival of the sakura, or cherry blossom, and the accompanying arrival of spring for centuries – and many other countries have caught on.
“Festivals are now held in honor of the delicate pink and white petals all over the world, with many nationalities following the Japanese custom of picnicking with friends and family under a canopy.
“The flowers are only here for a week or two, so grab them before they’re gone.”
