WhatsApp was back online on Wednesday evening after thousands of users worldwide reported problems earlier in the day.
“And we’re back. Happy chatting,” the company wrote on its X account around 6:20 p.m. ET, nearly four hours after its original post confirming that issues had arisen.
According to DownDetector, there were nearly 9,000 reports of outages from Canada as of 2:30 pm ET, with the United States seeing just over 18,000 WhatsApp-related issues. There were even more in other countries, with the UK seeing around 68,000 outage reports and India around 31,000 around the same time. Those numbers began to drop in several countries around 3 pm ET.

There were also reports of problems with several other Meta-owned programs, including nearly 1,500 reports for Instagram in Canada and 500 for Facebook, according to DownDetector. Those have since declined, with just over 100 reports for Instagram and eight for Facebook as of 7 pm ET.
This is not the first time Meta has seen problems with its applications, with the most recent occurring last month when thousands of Facebook and Instagram users in Canada and around the world reported being signed out of their accounts. They were unable to access either platform for more than two hours.
Meta said at the time that a technical issue caused the problems. It was later resolved.
Global News reached out to Meta for comment on the issues reported Wednesday but did not hear back prior to publication.
