A few weeks before the thanksgiving event for Okanagan wildfire responders, the man thought the face of first responders during the McDougall Creek wildfire was recognized.

West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Brolund was presented with a plaque at city hall earlier Tuesday for his tireless work during last year’s devastating fire.

“Well, like many aspects of this fire, it’s all very overwhelming,” Brolund said.

“It was overwhelming from the very first moment and, of course, the outpouring of support has also been tremendous.”

While smiling, the city’s fire chief says it is just one of about 10,000 stories, and all of them deserve recognition.

“I’m the one who gets recognized a lot. I am often the one who is seen as being behind it. But this wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for 10,000 people who came together,” said Brolund.

“Whether it’s the firefighters that work below me, the other emergency responders, public works workers, the fire service, the RCMP, the city staff … I could go on and on and on.

“But to see all those people being recognized is a great thing.”
