Kolkata (June 17): A major train accident took place in New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. Sealdah-bound Kanchenjunga Express was hit by a goods train from behind. Many coaches of the Kanchenjunga Express were derailed due to the collision. The accident happened at around 9am on Monday. The goods train collided immediately with the Kanchenjunga Express which was on its way to Sealdah. Screams were heard everywhere. The train’s coaches were thrown several feet into the air due to the collision. Information is available that five to six people are injured.
North Eastern Frontier Railway said it has received news of a train accident at Rangpani in New Jalpaiguri. After the accident, rescue and rescue operations are underway at the site despite heavy rain. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed condolences over the accident.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her concern over the accident and said she was shocked by the news of the train accident in Darjeeling district. Kanjanjunga Express was reportedly hit by a goods train from behind. District Magistrate, doctors and ambulance have reached the spot for rescue and relief operations. Relief and rescue operations are going on on a war footing.
