West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose attacked the Bengal government and the education minister. In fact, the day before, Education Minister Baratia Basu had accused the governor of taking illogical and inconsistent steps regarding the state university. In response to these accusations by Basu, he said that he is working to protect the institutions’ autonomy from government interference.

Citing earlier judgments of the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court, Bose said the university regulations should be in line with the UGC Act and regulations. The state government is making attempts to control the universities of West Bengal.

The consent of the State Government is not necessary in the appointment of the VC of the University.

Earlier in the interview, Governor Bose had said that the Calcutta High Court had said that the Governor should consult the state government on the appointments of Vice-Chancellors. But the governor does not require the consent of the state in appointing the VC. The governor says that the law related to the university does not stipulate that the deputy prime minister must be an educationist. Anyone can be appointed as interim VC, he said. I have appointed a former chief justice and a retired SHB officer as acting venture capital considering their qualifications.

We will continue our struggle to make the university free from corruption and violence: the governor

Last year, West Bengal Governor Anand Bose said in a video message that he would continue his fight to free the country’s universities from corruption and violence. His comments came at a time when there is an ongoing war of words between the state government and the Raj Bhavan over the governor’s appointment of interim vice-chancellors of several state universities.
