Asda Protect Moisturizing Sun Lotion SPF30 High, Calypso Press & Protect Sun Lotion SPF30 and Bondi Sands SPF 50+ Unscented Sun Lotion all failed the watchdog’s tests to assess their SPF and UVA protection.

Asda said it did not recognize the results, while Calypso said its product passed EU standards and regulations in independent tests.

Which? said Calypso’s Press & Protect lotion, at £8 for 200ml, “barely mustered” two-thirds of its claimed SPF30 in both tests.

Asda’s Protect Moisturizing cream failed both rounds of testing, the watchdog said.

Which? tested face-specific sunscreens for the first time this year, and found Bondi Sands SPF50+ at £7.99 for 75ml “didn’t come close” to the claimed SPF and didn’t reach the minimum required UVA protection.

Natalie Hitchins, which one? Head of Home Products and Services, said: “It is very worrying that some major brands failed our tests and did not offer the level of sun protection claimed on the packaging.

“However, it is great to see cheaper quality sunscreen options available on the high street and in supermarkets at a time when shoppers need affordable options.

“Our results prove that you don’t need to splash out to keep yourself and your loved ones safe in the sun this summer, and that many of the brand name products in supermarkets can do a good job.”

Lidl’s Cien Sun Spray SPF30, costing £3.29 for 200ml, “won” the test and did an “overall excellent job” of protecting the skin.

Another budget brand, Aldi’s Lacura SPF30 sun lotion at just £2.49 for 200ml, also passed the SPF and UVA tests.

Lidl Cien Kids Sensitive 50+ Sunscreen Spray (£3.29 for 200ml) has also been shown to meet SPF and UVA protection claims.

An Asda spokesman said: “We have recently retested Asda Protect Moisturizing Sun Lotion SPF 30 High by a leading external supplier using internationally recognized test methods. These test results confirmed that this product has an SPF of 31.5, so we do not recognize the test results as ? published.

“When which? Reviewed the same product in 2022, they rated it ‘great value’ at the time and it passed their SPF test.”

Calypso Sun said: “All products have been carefully and independently tested and passed EU standards and regulations.”

Bondi Sands did not respond to a request for comment.
