Virat Kohli scored a 49 ball 77 against Punjab Kings
As the ongoing IPL holds the key to selecting the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, much has been said about Virat Kohli’s place in the 15-man squad to be selected.
The fans painted the Chinnaswamy Stadium red on Monday night as Royal Challengers Bengaluru took on Punjab Kings (PBKS) in match number 2024 of IPL. 6. In response, they got to see one of Virat Kohli’s classics as the hosts registered a 4-wicket win to collect their first point of the season.
Kohli’s innings was not a flawless effort as he received a reprimand on the first ball on zero and then on 33. On both occasions, pacer Sam Curran was the offending party. Making the most of the opportunities, he fired a 49 ball 77 with the help of 11 boundaries and 2 sixes. It was the 16ed over when he fell prey to Harshal Patel’s slower delivery, and gave it to Harpreet Brar at third man. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Kohli admitted that he was disappointed because he could not finish the match.

“I’m trying to give the team a sensational start, but if wickets fall you have to assess. Wasn’t the usual flat field. Disappointed we couldn’t finish the game. Was in the slot but sliced to a deep point. They know I play the cover drive well, so they’re not going to allow me to hit gaps. You have to come up with a game plan here and there,” Kohli said.

“I know my name is now attached to just promoting the game in different parts of the world when it comes to T20 cricket. I probably still have it,” he added.
The former RCB captain also had a special message for the lively crowd at the Chinnaswamy stadium. He said, “It has been going on for years (a love story with Chinnaswamy’s fans). People talk about a lot of other things when you’re involved in sports – achievement, statistics, numbers. But when you look back it’s the memories you create. The love, appreciation and support I have received has been incredible.”
While he has now had the Orange Cap for a short time, he said he has passed that stage where these things matter now.
“I don’t play for these Caps anymore. That’s the promise I can give here – I’ll keep turning up and keep trying my best,” he added.
