GUWAHATI: The Union Cabinet has approved four major space projects, including India’s next moon mission and a mission to Venus, as part of the Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) Vision 2047. Union Minister Ashwini Vishnu announced the decisions, emphasizing that all the tasks are limited in time and have made significant progress.

ISRO plans to launch the Venus mission in March 2028, coinciding with the closest approach of Earth and Venus. This marks India’s second planetary mission, after the successful Mars Orbiter mission in 2014, with a budget of $1,236 million. The orbiter will explore the surface of Venus, the atmosphere and the interaction with the Sun.

The Chandrayaan-4 mission was approved for $2,014 million over 36 months. This mission will include five modules that will be launched in two separate missions, with the goal of landing on the surface of the Moon, collecting samples and returning them to Earth. It should be noted that it will include docking and undocking maneuvers, a first for India. They plan to send humans to the moon by 2040.

Vishnu emphasized the significance of these missions as preparatory steps toward manned lunar exploration, stating, “The moon landing was a big step; now we’ll bring back samples.”

In addition, the Cabinet approved the continuation of the Gaganyan mission and the establishment of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), at an estimated cost of ₹20,193 crore. The first BAS module is expected to be operational by December 2029, and include eight missions, including the steps needed to build the space station.

The final approved project is the Next Generation Launch Vehicle, which will improve ISRO’s launch capability from 10 tonnes to 30 tonnes in low Earth orbit. This project, at a cost of 8,239 million dollars, should last 96 months, with the first launch expected within 84 months.
