British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in his speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, expressed his support for India following French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Joe Biden.

Starmer said that “the Security Council needs to change to become a more representative body, ready to act – not paralyzed by politics.”

“We want to see a permanent representation of Africa in the Council, Brazil, India, Japan and Germany as permanent members, and additional seats for elected members as well,” said the British Prime Minister.

Currently, the UN Security Council consists of five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members. The non-permanent members are elected by the United Nations General Assembly for a two-year term. The five permanent members – Russia, Great Britain, China, France and the United States – hold with the power to veto any substantive decision.

Earlier on Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron supported India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) during his speech at the UN General Assembly.

He also confirmed the membership of Brazil, Japan, Germany and two African countries, and emphasized the need to make the UN Security Council more comprehensive and representative. Macron stated, "Let’s make the UN more effective. We need to make it more representative and that’s why France is in favor of expanding the Security Council. Germany, Japan, India and Brazil should be permanent members, along with two countries that Africa decides to represent".

Last week, US President Joe Biden expressed support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

During the Quad Leaders Summit, the leaders of the Quad (USA, India, Japan and Australia) emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms in the UN body in a joint statement.
This follows bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Biden on September 21 in Wilmington, Delaware, where Biden reaffirmed US support for India’s inclusion in a reformed Security Council, according to a White House statement.
