Two Irish tourists tragically lost their lives in a devastating car collision in the heart of the Italian capital, Rome.

Aged 59 and 60, these individuals were trying to navigate a junction controlled by traffic lights in Rome at 1:50 pm BST (12:50 pm local time) on Thursday when they were involved in a collision with a Ford Fiesta, as reported by the Italian news outlet Corriere.

After the violent collision, the 54-year-old driver got out of his vehicle to offer help while the emergency services rushed to the scene.

Despite the efforts of the driver and paramedics, unfortunately, the Irish citizens could not be saved, who are believed to have succumbed to their injuries after impact.

The driver, whose identity is still not revealed at this time, was then taken to Sant’Eugenio Hospital, as he also suffered injuries in the tragic incident.

Photographs of the crash site captured police officers within a secure perimeter. On the asphalt, a straw hat, believed to have belonged to one of the victims, lay abandoned.

In order to facilitate an initial investigation by law enforcement, one of the traffic lanes was closed to vehicles. One crucial aspect that officers will need to determine is whether the driver disregarded a red traffic signal when he collided with the two Irish tourists, as reported by Corriere.

This tragic event unfolded via Cristoforo Colombo, a road famous for its dangerous nature, located within the residential and business area of Eur on the southern outskirts of Rome. It is worth noting that just two weeks before that, on the night of August 24, a 19-year-old man lost his life while driving his moped along the same road. In addition, just ten days earlier, the manager of a famous beach resort in Ostia, near Rome, met with a fatal accident while operating a moped.

Excessive speed by motorists is believed to be the main contributing factor in the majority of these collisions.
