It’s easy when you own a business to get lost in the business, for it to become your whole life, to be only what people see are you.
It is important for business owners to have time for themselves, beyond family even.
It’s on my mind today because someone commented to me this week that they think I work crazy hours for my businesses, and said they aspire to do that for theirs.
I don’t work crazy hours. A typical week is 60 – 70 hours. My recharge is what I do outside of work. It’s refreshing and fun. Beyond family time, which is abundant since my commute to the office is 5 minutes each way.
My passion for relaxing and recharging is writing. It has been many years. I have had plays produced here in Australia, USA, Canada and Ireland as well as several short films including rabbit chaser, which won numerous awards. There was even a musical adaptation of the play, which won a Green Room award in Melbourne. There were several awards along the way, which were validated.
Recently, my book, not dead yet became famous It was a 4-year project that led to publication and then subsequent promotional activity. It has nothing to do with my business.

I mention these things to demonstrate an activity far from business, an activity that offers life experiences and other perspectives that I find refreshing and enjoyable.
While I appreciate that this post will be read as a promotion, and it is, it is mainly here to show that I appreciate a life outside of business. I think all of us who own and run businesses need outside interests that do more to define us as a person than the businesses themselves.
To be sure, the business is important, it provides for so many who rely on it. I guess my point is that you trust you and Allowing yourself to get lost in business is not healthy.
