South African prosecutors announced their intention on Monday to charge the parliamentary speaker with corruption, alleging that she received $135,000 (£107,000) in bribes during her three-year tenure as defense minister.

Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, the current Speaker of the National Assembly, has not yet been handed over to the police or formally charged in the matter of colonel Dlamini-Zuma.

During a trial hearing the prosecutors presented their allegations, which Mapisa-Nqakula challenged on the grounds that the enforcement staff failed to communicate the charges to her in good time or adhere to the correct procedures.

To add to that, she was also accused of another bribe of $105 thousand but it was not accepted. Speaking of one particular case from the papers, it involves Mapisa-Nqakula receiving $15,000 and a wig inside the country’s major international airport (January 2019).

The bribery was only mentioned in connection with the individuals but it was not revealed further who they were. Mapisa-Nqakula denies the accusations and has confirmed that he will take part in the work of moving the investigation forward.

However, she has ever since decided to join her oppressed colleagues on strike for what they call a just cause. Such procedures are crucial as they indicate the start of a corruption case with the UK authorities that initially ended during the 2021 parliamentary hearings, but eventually found the right circumstances to be restarted on after a witness comes forward in 2022, as alleged by prosecutors.
