New York (International Desk) According to UNESCO, some of the world’s most famous glaciers will disappear from the planet by 2050. The review highlights the rapid melting of glaciers in the World Heritage Site. Despite efforts to limit global warming, a third of such glaciers are under threat.

There are fifty UNESCO World Heritage sites with glaciers, which is about 10% of the total area of glaciers worldwide. They include the highest (near Mount Everest), the longest (in Alaska) and the last remaining glacier in Africa.

The review says that if global warming does not exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial temperatures, two-thirds of the remaining glaciers can still be preserved. The UNESCO assessment, prepared in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), shows that these glaciers have been melting faster since 2000 due to global warming caused by carbon emissions.

Glaciers melt 58 billion tonnes of ice each year, which is equivalent to the total water used in France and Spain each year and accounts for around 5 percent of global sea level rise. Threatened glaciers are located in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America and the Oceania region.

Only rapid reductions in carbon dioxide emissions can protect glaciers and the incredible biodiversity that depends on them. UNESCO is also advocating for a new global fund to monitor and protect glaciers, as well as massive reductions in carbon emissions. Such funding will support comprehensive research, development of exchange networks among all parties and implementation of early warning and disaster risk reduction measures.

Half the world’s population depends directly or indirectly on glaciers for water for domestic use, agricultural activities and energy production. As glaciers melt faster, millions of people face water shortages and are more vulnerable to natural disasters such as floods, while rising sea levels could leave millions more homeless.
