Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek is urging the Alberta government to keep pieces of the now-cancelled Green Line LRT project.
The city council voted this week to end the $6.2 billion project after Premier Danielle Smith’s government said it would pull its $1.53 billion funding — unless the city changes and extends the line’s route.

The city estimates the work stoppage will cost $850 million on top of the $1.3 billion already spent on land acquisition, building utilities and new light rail vehicles.
In a letter Thursday, Gondek is asking the province to keep some of the work already done to save taxpayers money and prevent delays in future work, including keeping the contract for new vehicles.
The province has hired an engineering company to draw up new proposals by the end of the year.
Transport Minister Devin Dreeshen says the Green Line is poorly engineered, and has faced rising costs even as its scope has shrunk.
