Canada’s Leila Fernandez advanced to the quarter-finals of the Rothesay Classic grass court tournament with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Switzerland’s Viktoria Gulovic on Wednesday.

Fernandez, of Laval, Que., claimed the only break point on offer in the third set to win the match in 2 hours and 21 minutes.

Gulovic moved ahead after winning a similar clean set in the first when she converted the only available break point.

Both players had difficulty holding serve in the second set. Fernandez was broken three times in five break points, but converted four of nine break points to take the set and even the match at 1-1.

Fernandez, seeded sixth in Birmingham, will face Australia’s Ajela Tomlianovic in the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 event.

In women’s doubles play, New Zealand’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Rutliffe lost their first-round match 6-3, 6-2 to Belgium’s Gerrit Menen and Britain’s Heather Watson. Dabrowski and Rothliffe took second place after winning the title last week in Nottingham, England.
