A suspicious death at a southeast Calgary hotel has prompted a police investigation Monday.
According to a post on social media, police responded to reports of a shooting in the 0-100 block of Shawville Road SE in the Shawnessy neighborhood around 3 p.m. Police said one man was located dead in one of the rooms.
Acting Staff Sgt. Juno Brady confirmed to Global News that the incident took place on the fourth floor of the hotel. At the time of the incident, a children’s birthday party was being held at the hotel.

Brady told reporters Monday that one person is in custody and the Calgary Police Service’s homicide unit is investigating the incident. It is not known if the shooting was targeted.
“The investigation is still early and we don’t have (more) information at the moment,” he said. “With an incident like this the whole hotel is a crime scene, so we’re not sure where exactly we’re going to find any evidence … The scene is being staged at the moment.”
